Onboard your first-party email data responsibly
It's important to respect the rights of your customers and prospects when engaging in online and offline marketing activities. It's your responsibility to make sure that you have the rights and permissions needed to upload your customer and prospect email lists onto the AdRoll platform, including their consent where required. After all, you don’t want to serve ads to individuals who won't be receptive to them.
CRM Audiences allow you leverage your own first-party customer data for highly targeted and effective advertising. While we recommend integrating your B2C CRM to AdRoll to dynamically sync your email lists through Connected Audience, you can also create a CRM Audience manually by uploading a static CSV file containing email addresses. This allows you to bridge the gap between your customer database and your advertising campaigns.
Static CRM Audiences Use Cases
Connected Audiences enables you to reach the same audience with display ads that you reach with your known contacts:
- Re-engage: Reach out to leads and complement your lead nurturing programs with cross-channel retargeting.
- Leverage existing emails: Multiply the investment in your email database by leveraging your email audience on display. AdRoll makes it easy to onboard your first-party CRM data.
- Connect online and offline campaigns: Integrate your offline CRM data to deliver consistent and relevant messaging to your audiences.
Connected Audiences can help define key audiences that can't be identified through site activity alone:
-
Customers who converted prior to AdRoll Pixel placement
-
Seasonal purchasers, or customers who purchased specific products
-
Long-term customers who have fallen out of the audience duration
-
Prospects who shared their contact information at an offline event
-
External user lists from your email service provider
Prepare your CSV file
Format your CSV file correctly:
- Only CSV files are accepted.
- Maximum file size: 10MB.
- Your email list must contain at least 100 unique user emails.
- Do not list any information other than the emails addresses.
- All emails must be listed in a single column without a heading.
- Use personal emails where possible. Work emails have a lower match rate.
- Remove empty rows.
- Email addresses must be in valid. Make sure your email database is up to date; we recommend adding an email validation to your forms and signup flows to help make sure visitors provide valid emails.
-
Use one of valid email formats below:
- text@email.com format
- MD5 Hashed. Example: 074a297cd9b8a62284f99e03fcc08a1c
- Make sure it is in plain text by applying lowercase removing beginning and ending white spaces in the email before feeding into MD5 hashing function.
Upload your CSV file to AdRoll
-
Once your CSV file is ready, log in to AdRoll and navigate Audiences > Website Audiences to on the left menu.
-
Click New Audience > Create a New Audience.
- Select CRM for Audience Type.
- Upload your .CSV file and complete the remainder of the form.
-
Click Create Audience.
- The initial cookie matching process can take up to 72 hours. Take this into consideration when planning your CRM campaign.
-
The resulting number of matches could be more than the number of emails on the list as we match the email addresses with the cross-device data from AdRoll and our partner ad exchanges.
CRM Audience Status
A CRM audience will have the following statuses once the list is uploaded:
- Waiting For Matches - The CRM is actively searching its database. It's essentially looking for potential matches or duplicates. It may take up to 72 hours.
- Ready To Use - The segment is ready to be uploaded to your Retargeting campaign.
- Sync Issue - If you see the status of the segment as Sync Issue, please go through the guidelines of how to upload the CRM segment and if the issue still exists, kindly contact our Customer Support Team.
Editing CRM Audiences
-
CRM audiences can't be edited after they're created. Total visitors reflects the number of emails in your list.
-
You can't adjust a CRM Audience duration. The duration of a CRM segment is 120 days.
