Integrating AdRoll and Campaign Monitor

Through our Campaign Monitor integration, you can sync your Campaign Monitor email lists directly from your account to your AdRoll dashboard. Matched through our CRM data onboarding process, this integration helps you easily convert your lists into a targetable audience segment.

Please note that you must have at least 100 unique user emails in each of your lists for the CRM segment to successfully populate for web.


How do I create Campaign Monitor CRM segments?

Activating the Campaign Monitor integration

  1. Navigate to Settings > Integrations.

  2. Find the Campaign Monitor option, and click Sync segments from Campaign Monitor

  3. Check the box to Sync Campaign Monitor emails to AdRoll. A field to enter your Campaign Monitor API Key and Client ID will appear.

  4. Instructions for how to secure your API Key and Client ID differ depending on what type of account you have: single business or agency.


Instructions for a single business

If you have a single business account, your navigation header looks like this:

  1. In the top right corner of your Campaign Monitor dashboard, click on your company name.

  2. In the dropdown menu, select Manage Account.

  3. Select API keys.

  4. Click Show API Key.

  5. Copy your Client ID. Then, return to Integrations on your AdRoll dashboard and paste it in the corresponding field. Repeat for API Key.

Instructions for agency

If you have multiple clients, you will see the agency version of the Campaign Monitor dashboard:

  1. Clients.

  2. In your clients list, find the business that you are integrating. For example, let’s say you’re integrating AdRoll. Click on your client name.

  3. In your client’s profile you'll see a secondary navigation bar below the header. On the far right of this bar, find and select Client Settings.

  4. Click Edit next to your business name. In our example, AdRoll.

  5. Click Show Client’s API Info.

    Copy your Client ID. Then, return to Integrations on your AdRoll dashboard and paste it in the corresponding field. Repeat for API Key.


Selecting lists after integration steps

Back on your dashboard, there are only two more steps to turn your email lists into targetable segments.

  1. Click Select Lists to specify which (or all) lists you want to import as a CRM segment.

  2. Save

Each list selected will populate as its own segment in the Audience tab of your AdRoll dashboard.

Best practices for Campaign Monitor CRM segments

To learn how to create and manage your lists within Campaign Monitor, click here. Below we outline some tips and considerations to take when preparing your lists for CRM data onboarding.

  • Your lists should contain at minimum 100 emails.

  • Use personal emails when possible, as they match at a higher rate.

  • Make sure your email database is up to date—adding an email validation step during sign-up workflows can be very helpful to make sure that users are supplying active emails.

  • Consider combining CRM segments with other types of segments to boost performance. Remember, the larger the audience your campaign has, the more optimization we can perform.

When will my Campaign Monitor CRM segment be ready to use in my campaigns?

Your Campaign Monitor CRM segment may not appear on your dashboard immediately. We will begin the matching process for new lists within 6 hours. Any new emails added after the process has begun may take up to 2 weeks to be matched.

After your email list appears the cookie matching begins. Give your Campaign Monitor segment(s) up to seven days to cookie match for both web and Facebook and activate fully on your campaign. 

All Campaign Monitor segments will be automatically named with campaign-monitor in the name.

Please read on for more detail on what to expect with your Campaign Monitor segment(s).

  • Once integrated, we will pull new emails from Campaign Monitor every 6 days, keeping your Campaign Monitor CRM segment up to date as you work with your lists.
 Once pulled, the matching process takes up to 7 days.
  • For US advertisers, CRM can be launched on both web and Facebook. Where possible, we recommend using US-based email addresses; they match at a higher rate than non-US emails.

  • Outside of the US, CRM segments have limited functionality on web campaigns. We are working on building this functionality, but we recommend that non-US advertisers adopt CRM retargeting on Facebook instead.

  • CRM segments cannot be edited after they are created.

  • Cookie matching on Facebook will take less than a day. 

  • Cookie matching on the web takes up to seven days, depending on the size of your email list. Make sure you take this into consideration when planning your CRM campaign.

How many emails were matched?

When your segment appears in your Audience tab, we'll display the number of emails originally uploaded through the Campaign Monitor integration.

To see how many emails were successfully matched for web or Facebook, click on the name of your Campaign Monitor segment in the Audience tab.

  • Total Web Visitors: Total active cookies matched for web.

  • New Web Visitors: Cookies matched within the date range specified.

  • Total Facebook Visitors: Total active cookies matched for Facebook.
